Take every thought captive

2 Corinthians 10:

For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ, being ready to punish every disobedience, when your obedience is complete.

We’ve all heard that we should take every thought captive, but what does that really mean?  What’s the practical application of this verse?

Many of live in “attack” mode, meaning that we believe we are under constant attack from the enemy.  Daily life is a struggle between God and the devil, with us hopelessly stuck in the middle.  Our minds are innundated with lies and mistruths, our hearts filled with pain.

When a painful thought pops up, many of us try to immediately suppress it or talk our way out of the pain it causes in our hearts.  Many times, we’ll even say things like “I shouldn’t be thinking this.”  But, what do we do next?  For the most part, nothing.

In this same scenario, what if we then asked Jesus to speak into the thought or belief?  What if we took it to him, told him what we were feeling or believing about it, and asked him for his truth? Now, not only have we taken the thought captive, but we’ve also presented it to Christ.

So, in it’s most simple form, the healing of a misbelief starts with not just acknowledging the thought or feeling, but then also presenting it to Jesus so that he can bring it under his obedience.  He will speak truth into our hearts and punish every argument and lofty opinion that has been raised against the knowledge of God.
